What is art?

Art is a term covering a variety of phenomena, and defined very differently, at different times and places. The Swedish word is derived from ancient Germanic mound kunst which derives from "können" which means "knowledge". The English word for art, nature derives instead from the Latin ars, which roughly means "arrangement" or "arranging". Today the term is often used in connection with what formerly named the fine arts, which include visual arts, architecture, decorative arts, sculpture and music, that is, creative activities for the emotional or expressive, or the result of such activities. This use of the concept is an evolution from the ancient idea of the seven liberal arts (in Latin Septem artes liberales) each academic subjects such as grammar and rhetoric, but also music. Art was as strongly associated with a craft. From this perspective included the concept of art beyond, more tangible phenomena engineering and martial arts. In the same vein as the latter use the term used, for example, still for circus arts and martial arts, which in English is called martial arts.
